3 Fuck Netflix's new feminism documentary, and fuck the cis "feminists" who fawn over
it(including my mother and girlfriend)
For those of you who don't know, there's a documentary that's been the rounds called Feminists: What Were They Thinking
detailing second wave feminism. Lots of people have been heaping praise on it for how well it portrays the struggles of
feminists back then, and for revealing exactly how far we still have to go in terms of women's equality.
But not once in the entire documentary does it cover the participation of trans women in second wave feminism, and
their struggles which persist today. The cast of interviewees consists mainly of feminists from that era, who have been
making the same overdone, implicitly trans-exclusionary arguments for decades. It also centers women's art, none of
which includes a hint of queerness- much less trans women- save for the pseudo-edgy, "women=pussy" lesbian faction of
the movement. All around, its extremely disappointing that something this trans-exclusionary could be produced. Trans,
rights are one of the most visible battlegrounds in civil rights politics today, and given how hard it is to escape its
mention, I'm lead to believe that the only way the very mention of trans women could escape this documentary is
through intentional exclusion, based on the belief that trans women are women.
And tons of women, tons of feminists, are buying into this. What really hurt me was the fact that my mother and
girlfriend(both cis), who were watching it **while I was in the room, getting increasingly angry** were going on and on
about how great it is. T don't understand how they can be so supportive of me, and claim to be such great allies, while
completely glossing over how shitty it i. It feels like they get to bond over the shared experience of being a woman, and
being a feminist, while I'm left out of both of those categories because I don't *bleed.*
